What This Study Looked At
Researchers from Taylor’s University and the International Medical University in Malaysia conducted a systematic review of molecular hydrogen therapy in cancer management. Searching Cochrane, PubMed, and Google Scholar, they screened 677 articles published within the past decade — selecting 27 that met rigorous eligibility criteria. The review examined hydrogen therapy across multiple cancer types, including lung, liver, ovarian, cervical, colon, and colorectal cancers, and across all three main methods of delivery: hydrogen-rich water, hydrogen gas inhalation, and hydrogen-rich saline.
What They Found
The findings were consistent across all 27 studies and all delivery methods. Researchers observed that molecular hydrogen demonstrated measurable anti-tumour effects — slowing or inhibiting tumour growth in multiple cancer types. Patients receiving hydrogen therapy alongside conventional chemotherapy and immunotherapy showed improved survival rates and better blood parameters compared to those receiving standard treatment alone.
Side effect profiles also improved meaningfully. Patients reported reduced fatigue, less nausea, better appetite, and an overall higher quality of life during treatment. In some studies, hydrogen therapy helped protect healthy organs — particularly the liver and kidneys — from the collateral damage of intense chemotherapy. One notable clinical finding involved patients who had lost hearing during radiotherapy regaining it after hydrogen therapy was introduced.
At a molecular level, hydrogen was found to act as a selective antioxidant — neutralising the most harmful free radicals without disrupting the beneficial oxidative processes the immune system depends on. It also demonstrated pro-apoptotic effects, meaning it appeared to promote natural cancer cell death while leaving healthy cells intact.
What This Means in Context
This is a systematic review — one of the strongest study designs available — but it synthesises results from studies that vary in size, methodology, and cancer type. The researchers are clear that larger, randomised controlled trials are needed before definitive clinical recommendations can be drawn. The evidence is consistent and promising, but hydrogen therapy should be understood as a complementary approach to be considered alongside conventional cancer treatment, not in place of it.
It is worth noting that this review covers all three forms of hydrogen delivery. Inhalation and hydrogen-rich saline were associated with the strongest results in oncology settings, while hydrogen-rich water showed meaningful benefits for side effect reduction and quality of life during outpatient treatment.
