It asked whether healthy adults — people without a diagnosed illness — would notice a difference in everyday wellbeing if they drank hydrogen-rich water consistently over a month.

The study was a double-blinded, placebo-controlled crossover trial in 26 healthy adult volunteers (13 women, 13 men, mean age around 34). Each participant drank either 600 mL per day of hydrogen-rich water or visually identical placebo water for 4 weeks, with the two conditions assigned in randomised order. The researchers tracked validated measures of psychological distress (the K6 scale, widely used as a screen for mood and anxiety symptoms) and objective measures of autonomic nervous system balance, including resting sympathetic nerve activity.

What They Found

After 4 weeks of hydrogen-rich water, participants showed significantly lower K6 scores compared with the placebo period — pointing to small but measurable improvements in mood and reduced anxiety symptoms in everyday life. Sympathetic nerve activity at rest also decreased significantly in the hydrogen condition, consistent with a calmer autonomic state.

Because the trial was a within-subject crossover — each participant served as their own control — these changes are not easily explained by differences between people or by the placebo effect alone.

What This Means in Context

This is a small trial in a healthy population, and the effects observed were modest in absolute terms — not the kind of changes that would replace any clinical treatment for diagnosed anxiety or depression. The interest of the study lies elsewhere: it suggests that hydrogen-rich water may exert a subtle but consistent effect on the everyday nervous-system and mood markers that shape wellbeing in people who are not unwell.

This pattern is consistent with the broader hydrogen literature: H2 appears to act as a gentle modulator of oxidative and inflammatory background, with the most plausible downstream effects being on systems that are sensitive to chronic low-grade stress — autonomic balance, sleep, mood. The trial does not establish hydrogen-rich water as a treatment for any psychiatric condition. It does suggest it may have a meaningful place in an everyday-wellness routine.
